About 5% of the territory of Ukraine is filled with household waste, which is larger than Slovakia. It was announced by the Chairman of the Association of Waste Management (WMA) Nikol Danylova.
“We really have problems in the industry. In case of absence of complete national statistics and waste accounting, even due to the official data, we see horrible figures. About 15 billion tons of waste are currently accumulated in Ukraine. Every year Ukrainians produce an additional 14.6 million tons of household waste. Why does it happen? The key answer is the lack of a waste recycling cluster”, – she stressed.
Nicole Danylova noted that to solve this problem it is necessary to bring the market to a civilized level.
“Today, the waste processing in Ukraine is relatively unprofitable. It can be changed by creating financial and economic benefits for investors. Alternatively, according to the ‘polluter pays’ principle. This model is fair for all participants in the waste management process”, – the Chairman of WMA emphasized.
